"I traveled to fitness conventions and attended top instructor training sessions and couldn't remember a thing."

Your business?
I produce and distribute exercise DVDs, product DVDs, and
infomercials.
Major events or motivations that led you to this
business?
I was teaching classes early in my career in Philadelphia, and
many instructors traveled from everywhere to take my classes. I
also traveled to fitness conventions and attended top instructor
training sessions and couldn't remember a thing from taking
notes on paper. I knew then that I needed to get these top
instructors and myself on video. I quickly formed Creative
Instructors Aerobics, Inc. (CIA) and put top instructor trainers on
video for instructors to learn.
CIA initially started producing videos for instructors in order to
provide ideas and choreography for their classes. While CIA
continues to produce workouts for instructors, we also now cater
to the home exerciser. Our format has changed over time. CIA
initially had up to four instructors teaching different styles of
workouts on one video. We found over time that our buyers
preferred having access to an entire workout. Around the same
time, other companies began selling our earlier instructional
tapes which were well-received by their customers. This led to a
change from including three or four different workout styles and/or
instructors to one instructor per video teaching an entire class.
Prior work experience, education, or specialized
knowledge that helped you?
I have BS in Education with an emphasis in Exercise Physiology.
I learned how to direct workout videos by experience in front of the
camera and working with very good directors.
Your top three personality traits that have contributed to
your success?
Outgoing.
Very good planning skills.
Positive energy.
They all go hand-in-hand. Knowing how to organize talent and
groups of people with proper direction on set, and making them
feel good, contributes to the success of a product.
The hardest issue you've had to deal with?
The challenge I had at the beginning was learning the video
production business. I soon discovered I had a good sense for
business. When I shot my first video, I found out how costly
production could be. I learned quickly how to save time which
saves money in production. Fortunately my first video was a hit
and sold two to three thousand units in six months.
Most satisfying thing about your work?
Making a successful workout DVD for any of my clients or for my
line of CIA Workouts.
Future plans and/or dreams for your business?
Making more workout DVDs and gaining more clients. My dream
is to direct a hit fitness TV show.
Favorite fitness activity?
Cross-training workouts using many aerobic machines followed
by moderate total body weight training.
Hobbies?
Golf and my kids.
Favorite place to vacation?
Outer Banks, North Carolina.
