Rob Glick grew up in Irvine, California, in close proximity to the
Pacific Ocean beaches, indulging in his favorite activity --
surfing -- almost every day. He continued being active during
college, regularly playing water polo and running cross
country. It was during his college years that Rob was
introduced to the fitness field. "while I was going to college,"
he says, "trying to figure out what I wanted to be if I grew up, I
started dating an aerobics instructor. I would go with her to
class and I loved it! The class was fun, full of energy, and a
great workout. So I became addicted and decided to change
my major to Athletic Training. I've been teaching group fitness
and training clients ever since."
After college, Rob ran his own studio from 1990 to 1994 and
also taught at the Voight Fitness and Dance Center in Los
Angeles. He credits these two factors as the ones which were
most significant in getting him to where he is today. "Teaching
at Voight gave me the opportunity to present all over the world
and grow as an instructor/presenter dramatically."
These days, Rob is the National Program Director for
CRUNCH Fitness in the USA, and presents on average 42 to
45 weekends a year, with 6 to 10 of those being international
events. He also manages to find time to teach regular group
fitness classes. He says he has to teach "to stay fresh and
make sure what I present is relevant. If I just present fantasy
choreography that students can't do, only instructors, it doesn't
translate. And though it may be fun, it doesn't do much to help
instructors with their own classes, and that is more what I am
after when I present."
Teaching gives Rob the opportunity to test his ideas. "When I
teach live to my students at home, I use them as a litmus test
to see what will work and what won't. I throw everything at
them. If they do well, I know it should work on the road. If they
struggle, then there is no chance I'm going to try to present it. I
really try to find the balance between creativity and having
participants being successful with the moves. Sometimes it
works and sometimes it fails miserably!"
Out on the road, Rob tries to find time to attend one or two
workshops at the conventions where he's presenting. He has
presented in more than 35 different countries, and jokes about
his travel schedule: "The last I heard, United Airlines was
going to name a plane after me."
Grueling though his schedule may be, Rob always has fun at
the conventions. He says the most interesting countries he
has travelled to are Russia, Australia, and Italy. Some of the
conventions are large enough to be almost mind-boggling:
"One of the weirdest, in a fantastic way, was presenting at the
Fitness Brazil Convention is Santos. You have one room with
probably 2,000 students taking class. The area is so large,
they have to have concert-size screens midway in the room so
the participants can see what the choreography is. You
definitely feel like a rock star!"
Rob got his start in the video business making videos for Kathy
Smith's company called Lethal Legs, Lethal Arms, and Lethal
Abs. Then he was approached by Darrin Grove and Patrick
Goudeau about becoming the third "G" in the G-Force. The
G-Force trio was named such because the last names of each
all started with the letter G. They became instantly popular in
the fitness video world for offering fun, fresh workout
choreography team-taught in a laid-back,
"just-wanna-have-fun" way.
Alas, Rob does not foresee the G-Force reuniting. "We've all
gone in different directions. Darrin Grove, though still
presenting from time to time in Europe, has his MBA and is
working in Chicago. Patrick Goudeau is flourishing like
always, and I am doing my own thing. So it is very hard for us
to coordinate our schedules."
The good news is that Rob continues to make DVDs. His two
newest, Step Gone Wild and Good to Go Hi/Lo are due out
anytime now, and he is planning even more for later in 2006.
"I will film a cycling video since I've had many requests for that.
A new BOSU video, probably a new conditioning video, some
new GRAVITY workouts. And then we will just have to see . . . ."
The personal Rob is 41 years old, married (sorry, ladies!), and
has two beautiful daughters named Dani (age 9) and Jordan
(age 4). He also has a 9-month old puppy, Milo. His hobbies
include "surfing, surfing, and then probably surfing," he
laughs. "No, I also like to read, mix music, take classes, cycle,
run on the beach, and wakeboard." His favorite book is The
Way of the Peaceful Warrior and his favorite movie, for right
now anyway, is Crash. He loves tacos and pasta, and his
favorite colors are deep, rich blues. Rob says his dream is to
someday be in a movie.
