What a gem of a workout! I quickly fell in love with this half step, half strength DVD. Tonya's step choreography is refreshing, fun, well-cued, and did I mention fun? The choreography is intermediate-level and athletic-based with just a touch of danciness thrown in. She builds four combos and puts them all together at the end.
After 30 minutes of step, you move on to 25 minutes of strength training using dumbbells and the step. The exercises are classic strength moves done in a controlled manner so you can heavy up on the weights. You'll do squats, plies, chest flys, biceps, rows, abs, and more, followed by a nice stretch.
Step Pump also has the unique option of a Spiritual Warmup. This is not a physical warmup (although there is a traditional physical warmup); rather, it's a warmup for your thoughts, emotions, and frame of mind. There are four different three-minute Spiritual Warmups you can select from. They are completely optional, so you can select any/all or none if you prefer. Tonya explains that it's difficult to change habits without also changing your thought patterns. In each of the Spiritual Warmups, she selects a passage from the Christian Bible and talks about it in terms of meeting your goals for total health -- mind, body, and spirit. |
